Watch out for misleading domain name sales

Dear Customers and Domain Searchers,

Another questionable practice has sprouted in the domain name world, it is a scam called "misleading domain name sales" which is the practice whereby unsuspecting companies are contacted with "warnings" that  third parties are trying to register domain names similar to their company name.

The trick was to inform the ususpecting businesses that they needed to act quickly if they wanted to stop their company name being registered as a foreign domain (such as www.companyname.kr (for South Korea). The idea is of course to scare people into registering domain names that they do not "need" and usually for a considerably high price.

T-Rex does not support the practice of misleading domain name sales and will never try to scare you into buying domain names from our company. We consider this practice at odds with the idea of protecting consumers and their rights.

If you have been contacted by a company making such claims about your company name, ask for details, such as, who is trying to buy your company domain name. Tell them you have proprietary rights to the domain and that you forbid the sale to see what kind of a response you get. If they reply that you must register the domain name from them in order to protect your domain, you are quite likely being scammed.
